IS THIS PLAN FOR ME?

The Bibo Bike Coaching Ultimate Sportive Plan is a 26 week (6 month) training schedule for a rider with at least 2 years experience whose goal is to finish well in a demanding Sportive such as L’Etape du Tour, La Marmotte or the Dragon Ride.

It is designed so that you can fit it to your schedule by choosing from the menu of sessions. Each phase of the plan has specific focusses with sessions designed to aid that. You are guided through which sessions to do and how best to create an effective plan with them. There are also instructions on how best to not put the plan together.

Included within the plan is a full strength training programme with links to video descriptions.

There are two shorter versions (22 week and 16 week) for riders who start the plan late and / or already have a high level of fitness.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Is this suitable for a beginner?

No. The plan is based on the expectation of a certain level of fitness and experience. If you have had less than a couple of years riding then, for a start, the type of Sportive this plan is designed for (e.g. L’Etape du Tour) is probably too ambitious a goal right now.

Go out and ride, then ride some more – that’s your best plan for now. If you want to be trained up to be able to consider something tougher you might want to contact mike@bibobikecoaching.co.uk for a different plan.

What equipment will I need?

Other than the obvious bike, both an indoor trainer and a heart rate monitor are almost essential. Your training will be very much more focussed and improved with a power meter. Other than that all the usual tools, clothing and equipment you’d expect.

What if I start late?

There are shorter versions of the plan included: 22 weeks and 16 weeks. These do rely on you having a decent level of fitness already however. That said, you can use the plan to work on elements of your fitness that you feel are barriers to achieving your goal, for example you could use Phase 4 to work on your climbing, Phase 2 to build your speed.

Being consistent with these phases, repeated if you have the
time, is pretty much guaranteed to improve your riding.

What if I can’t do the plan exactly as scheduled?

No problem ! The plan is designed so that you can swap sessions in and out. The preferred version is shown as are variations on less effective versions so that you can understand why a plan works, or doesn’t.

There are two considerations to make if you schedule your own version:

  1. How will what I do today affect tomorrow and/or next week ?
  2. Fitness = Training + Recovery. Without one you waste the other.

What if I miss a week? 

Often you can get away with it and stick to the plan regardless, especially if you missed a recovery week. If it was a key week, like one of the big ride weeks in Phase 5, you might want to repeat it and cut down a week from the end of the plan.

What if I miss two or more weeks?

You would be best off repeating the last Phase from either the start, or from after the end of the last recovery week. That means you will have to skip the last Phase, possibly more. That’s obviously not perfect but there are no shortcuts to fitness.
